My Mom, Mary Joan Smith has lived in Homewood since 1956. Her small, two bedroom home is nothing special, but mostly she can keep up with repairs (except a roof which will have to wait until next year). She kept the family floating by working at The Little Colony children's store. After I got to high school she began at Marshall Fields in Park Forest until it closed. Her late husband spent the last two years of his life confined to the Manteno VA. She drove every day to help feed him. Dementia had set in but she took her vows seriously.
Her old Buick dates back about 20 years. She struggles over repair bills with her limited fixed income.
She has done what other women her age didn't (most were homemakers) and she needs a break more than anyone I know.
