My kids

Kimberly Zehnder

We may not be homeless or dying of cancer but that doesn’t mean we aren’t faced with struggles. A few years ago I dedicated myself to being home with my three children, leaving my husband to be the main provider while I stayed home . My youngest suffers from severe food allergies and we just couldn’t trust anyone to care for him. People hear food allergies and roll their eyes and think to themselves “oh he’s the kid that has to sit at the no peanut table” and he’s the reason I can’t pack my kid nuts for lunch. They don’t understand the constant daily fear I live in that my son could ingest something that could kill him. He’s not just allergic to peanuts but to milk – imagine never being able to have pizza? Or cookies dunked in milk? People don’t realize how hard it is to take him anywhere for fear of him having a reaction and needing an epinpen. So with me staying home our cars are old, one having just about 200,000 miles our main car for driving our kids around. I don’t know that we will be able to afford a new car anytime soon and worry when this one gives out with such high miles. A new car seems trivial for some but for us it would be life changing. Thank you
