Our Family's New Normal

Judith A Celio

My 12 yr old son was the unintended victim of a gun shot that came into our home on January 31, 2018. He is now a T7 complete paraplegic who requires physical therapy and doctors appointments every week. I took 6 months off of work to be with him in the hospital and during that time depleted all my savings, am in pre foreclosure, had to move and lost a car because i could not pay. My husband and i share 1 car, so we have to work different shifts. Because of the care of my son, i go to bed at 11:30 pm and get up at 3am everyday to get my husband and i then go to work. I have an SUV but because of the difference in height to wheelchair, it is so difficult to pull my son in. Another car in household would make it easier for us all…i could get sleep, my son would not miss any appointments and he could transfer safely into car from wheelchair without the risk of falling. This would impact our lives greatly physically and financially due to the many hospital bills we have accrued and we can’t afford a second car. This would help us in our NEW NORMAL way of life.
